He wanted a discipline that tested the entire process of portable operation — from planning and transporting the gear to setting up quickly under time pressure. How a Typical RaDAR Rally Runs

Preparation

- Start simple: you need no special gear. A handheld and a vertical are enough to begin with — local FM QSOs on 2 m count too, as long as they are simplex. Repeaters are excluded.
- Practise first: set your station up and take it down three times in the garden before the rally. Every minute counts.
- Plan the route in advance: mark three to five possible locations on the map, each at least 1 km apart
