A big thank-you to Christian Singerl, OE8AGV: thanks to his initiative, we get the chance to bring amateur radio directly to the students of HTL Villach. It is exactly these door-openers that make getting young people into the hobby possible.

Amateur Radio Days at HTL Villach

On Tuesday, 7 July, and Wednesday, 8 July 2026, radio amateurs are guests at HTL Villach, exploring the world of radio together with the students – from the basics to their very first on-air contact.

  • Tuesday, 07 July: Daniel (OE8OPT) and Wolfgang (OE8GWQ)
  • Wednesday, 08 July: Christina (OE8YYY) and Michael (OE8YML)

On both days the students have permission to transmit: under the supervision and responsibility of the licensed radio amateurs, they may make transmissions themselves – for many, their first time on the microphone.

We are on the air roughly from 09:00 to 13:00 local time each day – not continuously, as other activities run in parallel, so a repeated call is well worth it.

A Call to the Community: Give the Newcomers a QSO!

The event is internal to the school – but you can all join in on air. That is where the OE8 community makes the difference.

We plan to be QRV on 2 m, 70 cm and shortwave (HF) on both days.

Please stand by on the Gerlitzen (2 m, 145.7625 MHz, -0.6 MHz) and Dobratsch (70 cm, 438.900 MHz, -7.6 MHz, CTCSS 88.5 Hz) repeaters, and on the simplex frequency 145.525 MHz (2 m FM). We will also be QRV on shortwave as needed – exact frequencies will be announced at short notice. Give the students a QSO, answer their greeting messages, and show them how welcoming our community is. A single call back can be the spark that gets them hooked.

All outdoor operators are asked to help out, too – on one of the days a SOTA activation within reach of the two repeaters might even work out, giving the students a special QSO to log.

Coordination and questions: [email protected]

Thank you for joining in – and once again, thanks to OE8AGV for making this possible.

73, Michael – OE8YML
