There are names that are not only well known in amateur radio, but are almost legendary. One of them is undoubtedly Martin, “da Tino” OE8KKK, a man whose reputation resonates far beyond the borders of Carinthia – not least thanks to his impressive antenna systems that would make even NASA scientists jealous.
The Antenna Galaxy of Dollich/Ferlach
When you visit Martin’s property in Dollich/Ferlach, one thing becomes immediately clear: no ordinary radio amateur lives here. The property resembles an antenna exhibition that literally touches the sky for visitors. Large Yagis, dipoles, vertical antennas – Martin’s collection is as diverse as it is gigantic. It is rumored that Austrian Airlines pilots use its antennas as a landmark.
In the photos (see gallery) it quickly becomes clear: Martin’s passion knows no limits. There is one beam next to the other, a high-end satellite antenna still finds Platy, and on the roof there is a rotating system that rivals a Swiss clockwork in terms of precision.
The man with frequency in his blood
Martin is not only known for his antenna construction, but also for the fact that he can be reached via radio practically around the clock. Whether from the company vehicle, in the gyrocopter or even on a paraglider – Martin always has a microphone at hand. Even at lofty heights, he surprises other radio operators by, literally, delivering “snackable surprises”: A few SOTA activators can confirm that a packet of chips suddenly flew towards them from the sky – sender? Of course OE8KKK!
If you want to reach Martin, you don’t need complicated coordinates or appointments. Simply call the Gerlitzen 2m relay OE8XNK – and it’s there! No matter what time of day or night, Martin doesn’t miss the opportunity to chat or give technical advice.
Mentor and motivator for newcomers
For Martin, there is nothing better than encouraging others to spark. Regardless of whether you are a complete beginner or a professional who is currently working on a new operating mode: Martin is always available to help and advise. He is particularly proud of encouraging others to build large antennas. Because as he likes to say with a wink:
“The stupidest radio operators have the biggest antennas!”
This modest self-assessment shows his humor, which makes him an indispensable support of the Carinthian radio community.
Tireless commitment to relays and more
Martin is not only active at the QRG, but also takes care of the technical infrastructure. He is a constant around the relays in S5. Thanks to his commitment, the repeaters are always in good working order and there is always a reason to use the frequencies – be it for nice chats or long-range connections.
The technology enthusiast
In addition to his passion for antennas, Martin is enthusiastic about everything that has to do with self-sufficient power generation. His battery arrays, which can often be admired in the photos, not only power his radios, but could probably also power a small village for days.
Satellite radio and “everything else too”
You might think that Martin has already tried everything – and you would be right. From classic shortwave operation to relay contacts to satellite radio – there is hardly anything he hasn’t done yet. And if he does, it will only be a matter of time before he dedicates himself to this area.
Reliable partner for BOS-ARSA queries
Tino is not only a dedicated radio amateur, but also an indispensable support for the regular BOS-ARSA queries. Regardless of whether it is about support with communication tasks, the provision of technical expertise or practical help – you can rely on Martin. His reliability and commitment are particularly evident in simulated crises, as he is always ready to support the communication exercises and play a key role in them. Thanks to his experience and his incomparable antenna system, he is a guarantee that communication remains stable even in difficult situations. Martin is a real role model for the combination of amateur radio and crisis communication!
A radio operator like no other
There are many reasons why Martin OE8KKK is a true original. His enthusiasm for amateur radio, his technical skills, his humor and his willingness to support others make him a real asset to the community.
If you ask yourself how Martin reconciles all of this, the answer is probably simple: Radio is his life. The frequencies are his second living room, and the community of radio operators is his family.
Thank you, Martin, for everything you do for amateur radio – and for the inspiration you give us all!
